It may have or have never crossed your mind on how this tasty sauce is made, but here’s how. Read on to know more on how to make an authentic Italian tomato sauce.

How is an Original Italian Sauce Made

When we say tomato sauce, there are a lot of varieties, especially in different regions of Italy. However, let’s focus on marinara in this article since it is a staple food for many families.

Start it With Some of the Most Wholesome Ingredients

Of course, what’s a tasty, thick, red sauce without some of the most important wholesome ingredients and fresh tomatoes. For example, let’s start with some of the best San Marzano tomatoes (although if that one’s unavailable, you can opt to some fresh Italian semi dried tomatoes or Italian canned tomatoes) that are mostly found out of Naples, Italy.

When you have chosen the right tomatoes for you, that’s a sign that you’re ready to create an authentic Italian variety of the tasty red sauce known as tomato sauce. Here are some of the ingredients that you have to prepare:

  • Vegetable base
  • Celery
  • Extra Virgin Olive oil
  • Carrots
  • Parsley
  • Water
  • Basil
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Crushed red pepper
  • Sugar
  • Black pepper

So, how do you cook it?

After gathering the best Italian tomatoes and other ingredients mentioned above, time to indulge in the kitchen. Prepare a huge pot to make sure all the ingredients fit in the pot with enough space to mix them and cook them thoroughly. The first step is to add some garlic, onions, celery, and carrots in the pan with some extra virgin olive oil in medium heat. Saute the ingredients until they’re soft (that’s around six to eight minutes).

After that, add some vegetable base in the mixture. Also add water, spices, and tomatoes while reducing the heat of the stove. Make the sauce simmer for around two to three hours or when all the ingredients are cooked thoroughly, and it’s richer in flavor and color. When done, you can also put the sauce in a blender to make the sauce smoother in texture.

This sauce can be consumed by the family in a week when stored in the refrigerator and up to 6 months when stored in the freezer.

Paired with Pasta

Your sauce wouldn’t be perfect when it’s not paired with pasta. No matter how great your San Marzano canned tomatoes or Italian plum tomatoes kinds of sauce are, it would still be lacking without some cooked pasta noodles below it. While spaghetti is always available, your sauce can also be paired with penne, farfalle, ziti, or even lasagna.
